1. House of Gucci

Directed by Ridley Scott

Release Date – November 24th


Starring: Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons.


Legendary director Ridley Scott returns this year with a biographical crime film based on the fascinating true story of how Patricia Reggiani (Gaga) planned the murder of her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci (Driver). The film is based on the 2001 book House of Gucci a Sensational story of Murder Madness Glamour and Greed by Sara Gay-Forden. It features an ensemble cast of actors and will follow the relationship between the heir to the Gucci fashion empire and his murder, trial and aftermath.



2. Zola

Directed by Janicza Bravo

Release Date – June 30th


Starring: Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas Braun and Colman Domingo.


Based on the viral 2015 twitter thread with 148 tweets by Aziah King aka Zola, it details a crazy two-day ordeal involving strippers, prostitution, gangsters and attempted murder. The movie premiered last summer at Sundance film festival to rave reviews and is directed by acclaimed director Janicza Bravo and distributed by A24, and the thrilling trailer looks promising. A unique premise based on the exaggerated true story; this is definitely a film to look out for this summer.



3. The French Dispatch

Directed by Wes Anderson

Release Date – October


Starring: Adrien Brady, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swindon, Benicio Del Toro, Timotheé Chalamet, Jeffrey Wright, Lyna Khoudri and Stephen Park.


The highly anticipated new Wes Anderson film with the full title The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun simply known as The French Dispatch. The comedy drama was originally scheduled for release in 2020 but was delayed twice. The 10th film by Wes Anderson is now rumoured to premiere at the 2021 Cannes film festival, followed by a worldwide release in October this year. Set in 20th century Paris, the film is about a fictional newspaper which brings to life three different tales they are considering publishing. In typical Wes Anderson style, the trailer features remarkable cinematography and has a pricey budget much like The Grand Budapest Hotel.



4. Last Night in Soho

Directed by Edgar Wright

Release Date – October 22nd


Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie and Diana Rigg.


Edgar wright is set to release a psychological horror film inspired by classic British horror films such as Don’t Look Back and Rosemary’s Baby. This is very exciting news for fans of his previous work which includes the Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, The Worlds End). Although he has described it as being “very different to my other films”, nonetheless its sure to be an intense thriller released this October. It involves an intriguing storyline about a young fashion designer who mysteriously disappears and ends up back in time in 1960s London. There is no official trailer yet, but photos taken from the set give us a glimpse of the stylish set design of 60s London.




5. The Green Knight

Directed by David Lowery

Release Date – July 30th


Starring: Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton.


Based on the Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, this upcoming movie starring Dev Patel is a blend of medieval fantasy horror. With a perplexing trailer, it is a new twist on the classic tale of Sir Gawain searching for the monstrous creature, The Green Knight.




6. Dune

Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Release Date – October 1st


Starring: Timotheé Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin and Zendaya.


Another highly anticipated movie of 2021 after multiple delays, Denis Villeneuve directs this sci-fi epic based on Frank Herbert’s classic book of the same name. It features an ensemble cast and it the first of a two-part series. With a big budget and stellar cast, it’s sure to become a modern classic. Dune was first made in 1984 by David Lynch to poor reviews at the time but has since become a cult classic, it will be exciting to see a big budget remake with an excellent cast.




7. Candyman

Directed by Nia DaCosta

Release Date – August 27th


Starring: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Colman Domingo.


Candyman is an upcoming horror film which is a sequel to the 1992 movie. Written and produced by horror master Jordan Peele, it’s based on the short story The Forbidden by Clive Barker. It tells the creepy story of the Candyman ghost story where you would say his name five times in a mirror. The film follows a struggling artist as he uncovers secrets of the Candyman legend and events turn deadly.



8. Don’t Look Up

Directed by Adam McKay

Release Date – TBC


Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Timotheé Chalamet and Ariana Grande.


Upcoming Netflix original movie Don’t Look Up by comedy director Adam McKay has an intriguing premise. It’s a comedy disaster film as Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio star as “low level astronomers, who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will destroy planet earth”. With an impressive cast, it is also Lawrence and DiCaprio’s first Netflix movie and is sure to be a hit this year.



9. Old

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

Release Date July 23rd


Starring: Alex Wolff, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie and Gael Garcia Bernal.


M. Night Shyamalan returns with a supernatural psychological thriller with an unsettling trailer. The movie is based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. It tells the creepy story of how a family goes on an idyllic beach holiday which suddenly makes a family age rapidly over the course of a day. With M. Night Shyamalan directing and young and upcoming talent starring, Old has great potential to be an intense thriller this summer.



10. Nightmare Alley

Directed by Guillermo del Toro

Release Date – December 3rd


Starring: Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins and Toni Collette.


Nightmare Alley is the new movie by Guillermo Del Toro based on the novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham. Not much is known about this film besides the cast which features notable stars. The synopsis is “an ambitious young carny (Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well chose words, hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than him”. Be sure to keep an eye out for this psychological thriller by the Del Toro this December.
