4 Netflix of Netflix’s Most Gripping Documentaries

Netflix early this month dropped their first trailer for their upcoming true crime documentary series, The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness (2021). This series explores serial killer David Berkowitz, known as Son of Sam, who murdered and attacked numerous individuals. His crimes are the center of many conspiracy theories because his confessions and reasonings for his doings kept changing. Journalist, Maury Terry, has dedicated much time and published many works to support his theory that a satanic cult was the true prompter for his actions. As both a true crime fan and as someone with a general interest in nonfiction documentaries, this gave me a second to look back on other very interesting documentaries. Here is a compilation of my top 4 favorite documentaries films and series on Netflix.

1. Seaspiracy (2021)

This is a film which points out the human impact on the world’s oceans. Ali Tabrizi, a young British filmmaker, brings the malpractices of the fishing industry to light. The documentary encourages the viewer to take a look at how the impacts of these companies affect the world as a whole and to call out massive companies on their carelessness for the world for means of profit. This documentary runs at 90 minutes and was released early this year.

2. Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)

The Elisa Lam case is an extremely mysterious case well known to true crime fans. Taking place at the famous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, this limited series is centered around reenactments and interviews to give a full story of the events which had occurred. This consists of one series with four episodes which premiered february of this year.

3. White Boy (2017)

This is another crime based film centered around the title character “White Boy Rick”, Richard Wershe Jr, who was a drug lord during his adolescent years during the 80s. He has an interesting story being established as a dealer during the Detroit cocaine epidemic by the FBI for the purposes of being an informant and led to some major arrests. The FBI also abandoned him after releasing him as a minor. Despite losing their support, he continued being prominent in the drug industry until he was arrested at age 17. This documentary is him speaking out to journalists for the first time, 30 years later. It is an hour and 22 minutes long.

4. Disclosure (2020)

Disclosure is a transgender centered documentary concerning the representation of trasngendered people in comparison to the history and reality of what they face on the daily. This film compiles a list of impact trans members in American filmmaking industry which is not limited to Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono, Alexandra Billings, and many more. It is an outcry for progress that still needs to be made today. It has a runtime of an hour and 47 minutes and the team that created it is still active today at http://www.disclosurethemovie.com/

This is a short pile of some very interesting films that are actively available right now and are fun and completing watches for anytime. Also be sure to give Son of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness (2021) a watch when it is released May 5th.
