1. E.T The Extra Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982)

This well-known and much-loved film follows the story of an unlikely friendship between a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) and an alien that became stranded on earth. Elliott introduces E.T as the alien is then called to his brother and sister and they decide to keep E.Ts existence a secret, not all goes to plan however with E.T becoming ill which results in a tough situation for both E.T and Elliott



2. Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982)

Taking a step away from the psychological thrillers and instead heading more in the direction of science fiction we have Blade Runner the story of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) ex-policeman turned special agent missioned with exterminating a violent group of android’s intent on causing havoc. This dystopian futuristic film is considered a science fiction classic and a must-see by thousands


3. Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)

Back to the Future is an American science fiction/comedy that follows 17-year-old Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) as he accidentally travels back in time when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown goes wrong, endangering his future self. Light-hearted and packed with comedy back to the future makes for easy watching while keeping you engaged the whole time.


4. Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986)

Blue Velvet combines psychological horror/thriller and film noir to produce an energy-filled film packed with vibrant colours, mystery and suspense. This film follows the story of Jeffery Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) having returned home to see his ailing father discovers a severed ear in a field-leading him to discover far more sinister things going on in his small town.


5. Dead Ringers (David Cornenberg, 1989)

Yet another psychological thriller film from the 80s is Dead Ringers. This is the story of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, identical twin brothers that work side by side at their Clinic in Toronto, both brilliantly gifted in their fields of work and unusually close, sometimes pretending to be on another. Elliot, the more dominant twin spends his time seducing the woman that comes to the clinic and when he gets bored of them hand’s them off to Beverly, without the woman being made aware of the swap. This system works well until Beverly develops feelings for one of the women ultimately beginning the unraveling of the twin’s relationship and mental health.
