Asian Coming of Age Films

1. The Half of It

Follows the story of Ellie Chu, an introvert student who has a side business writing essay for her peers in exchange for money, she is then approached by a fellow classmate named Paul to help write love letters for a girl he has a crush on. The catch they both have a crush on the same girl. Alice Wu known for “Saving Face (2005) makes her return as a Writer and Director. It's important to note that she deeply cares about her characters since every single one have their own story without compromising their integrities. The Half of It achieves what many are unable too by focusing on the multilayered characters while challenging racism & homophobia needless to say once this film comes to an end it will leave you wanting more. 2. Bend It Like Beckham

We meet Jess Bhamra who loves playing football but is unable to fully enjoy it due to her strict Indian parents. While playing she is approached by Jules and asks her to join the local women's football club this causes her to hide her love for the sport. This film came out in 2002 nearly twenty years ago and one of the aspects that fails is the romantic relationship between the coach and the player makes it uncomfortable as well as unnecessary to the story when there are so many positive elements in the film. The realistic portrayal of her family's views is a reminder of how much time went into getting every detail correct such as family weddings and showcasing their traditions so many can learn about their culture. Since the film came out it's been well received and beloved since it was the first film to give them a sense of belonging but sadly since its release there haven't been many coming of age films that they can see themselves in.
