Every Live Action Star Wars Film Ranked From Worst To Best (My Opinion)

11. Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Boring, bland and downright stupid. The ninth and final instalment in the Skywalker saga does not live a good taste in your mouth. If you thought it couldn’t get any worse than The Last Jedi, then you might have to see this one. There are some feel good moments in the film, but it’s not enough to save the entirety of it.

10. Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

After the huge success of The Force Awakens, there was major hype for The Last Jedi and did it live up to that expectation, sadly no. The film felt like a major downgrade from the previous instalment. Everything that made the previous film great and feel fresh was clearly gone in The Last Jedi. However, this film does have it’s moments and is much more enjoyable than its sequel.

9. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

A prequel story focusing on one of the original and most popular characters in the franchise Han Solo, what could go wrong. Turns out a lot. This film at first starts of promising but as it progresses, it slowly starts to fall apart. It wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been, especially with such an iconic character. Overall, it’s not a terrible movie and is still fun to watch, it just had such potential to be a better film but in the end was just disappointing.

8. Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

The first film in the prequel trilogy and is by far the worst of them. There was a lot of hype surrounding this film since it was released 16 years after the original trilogy wrapped up. People were excited to see the new story and how it would integrate previous characters from the original trilogy as well as introduce new characters. In the end many were left disappointed by the movie myself included. However, there are still some redeeming qualities that make it a more enjoyable film than the others so far in this list.

7. Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

The next instalment in the prequel trilogy was a vast improvement from it’s predecessor and some would consider it to be the best of the prequel trilogy. Though despite all the good things about this movie, it’s still far from perfect. The film feels dull at many points and only picking up as it gets closer to the end. The script is cheesy, the dialogue feels unnatural at some points and some of the acting is questionable. Though despite this I feel that this film is better than The Phantom Menace but not the best in the prequel trilogy.

6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Based on events before A New Hope, this film shows how a prequel story should be. Intriguing plot, loveable characters and fantastic mise-en-scene, this film looks and feels amazing. The only reason that it’s number 6, is that the remaining films are much better.

5. Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

The third and final instalment in the prequel trilogy and in my opinion the best one, Revenge of the Sith. This is how the prequel trilogy should have been, action packed, not feeling dull and fantastic performances. Everything about this film is great and I would rate it higher but unfortunately, it has to be number 5.

4. Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

The film that kicked off the sequel trilogy and the best one of them, The Force Awakens. When Disney brought the rights to Star Wars in 2012 and announced that they would be continuing the story of Luke Skywalker many fans were worried about how the films would turn out. Apart from it’s sequels, The Force Awakens was a great film and many people loved it. The story was not overly complicated, it had loveable characters as well as bringing back old characters from the previous films. It’s a shame to see that this film was good but it’s sequels were not anywhere close to it. Despite this it only takes the fourth spot on the list.

3. Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)

The film that kicked off one of the most iconic franchises in film history. What is there to say about this film that hasn’t already been said. The characters are amazing, the mise-en-scene is amazing, the whole entire film is amazing. Question is though, if the film is so amazing, then why isn’t it number 1. The answer, because the last two films took what this one had and made it better.

2. Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

The last two films were very tricky to choose between but in the end, I had to make the decision. The second best of the whole franchise, Return of the Jedi. This film was a brilliant way to send of the original trilogy and left everyone satisfied. The whole entire film was great and it’s not bold to say that it’s one of the best films ever made. However, there is still one film that I think did it a bit better.

1. Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Here it is, the best film in the entire Star Wars franchise, The Empire Strikes Back. Why is this film the best, because it took what made A New Hope great and made it better. The characters are still if not more loveable, the action is turned up a notch and the mise-en-scene is on full display here. This is definitely the best film in the franchise and no doubt one of the best films ever made.
