Fresh (2022)

Updated: May 11, 2022

Fresh (2022) is a feature film directed by Mimi Cave, about a young woman wanting to be loved and cared for. She has no success with a dating site after going on dates with corny men, but then meets Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store, who pretends to be something he is not in order to lure her in. This is quite an unusual thriller, however, as Steve has a weird approach: unlike a typical serial killer/cannibal, he is a very joyful character who doesn’t display his madness.

Most of the time I found the concept amusing and enjoyable to watch, as a consequence of not knowing is going to happen next, giving suspense.

Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) plays a different kind of victim, playing Steve at his own game, and iss very smart about it. I enjoyed how Mimi Cave made this film, as she makes people question if Noa really likes Steve, or was she playing with him to get what she wants.

An unusual title sequence in the middle of the movie uses abstract images and point of view shots, which gives the film such a twist.. Techniques like this doesn’t feel familiar like other movies, where it takes forever to start the suspense; this title sequence creates an effect to signal the film has now started, drawing the audience in.

The cinematography presents a different concept for a thriller, a lot of unsettling close ups are used to draw the audience in and make them feel uncomfortable. A particular scene of him dancing away while cutting up human body pieces includes a lot of interesting slowed down montage shots, along with dolly zooms, pans, and tracking shots, which creates such an outburst that you wouldn’t expect from a thriller movie. This made it more frightening, due to the fact that it displays how insane he is, in a much more scary way than the more traditional quiet, cold and creepy killer.

The lighting used has a lot of dark tones and red back light, to show the evil inside Steve, expressing the type of person he is. However, in one particular scene the red appears on Noa as well, implying that she is going to the dark side with him.

This film is a must watch and will engage the audience like no other thriller.
