LGBT SERIES - Gay Representation in Media

Five beautiful films that focus on the romantic relationships between men on the big screen.

1. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

(Director: Ang Lee)

Brokeback Mountain is a classic. Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger play Jack and Ennis, two shepherds who form a romantic relationship that is made heart wrenchingly complicated when they both marry their girlfriends. An achingly wistful and subtly beautiful depiction of forbidden love that could rival the greats. Brokeback Mountain is a classic for a reason.

2. Moonlight (2016)

(Director: Barry Jenkins)

Forever deserving of its Academy Award for Best Picture, Moonlight is a beautifully tender yet heart-breaking story of a young man’s journey to discover himself whilst confronting his sexuality.

3. Your Name Engraved Herein (2020)

(Director: Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu)

A look into the lives and relationship of Jia-han and Birdy in a post martial law 1987 Taiwan. Amid an oppressively homophobic era, social stigma and family pressures, Jia-han and Birdy fall in love, yearning for one another. Your Name Engraved Herein will leave you feeling haunted.

4. Party Monster (2003)

(Directors: Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato)

Based on a true story, Party Monster is fuelled by a star-studded cast, exuberantly vibrant costuming, and lots of parties. A sad story of the downfall of the original Club Kids in the late 80s and early 90s NYC club scene. Party Monster primarily focuses on Michael Alig, bored of the Midwest, he arrives in New York City, quickly rises to fame, only to have it all come crumbling down around him when drugs, sex and murder take a hold of him. Whilst the story of Michael Alig, James St. James and Andre “Angel” Melendez is a sad one, Party Monster does a phenomenal job at showcasing the highlights and importance of the Club Kids in the gay community and demonizing the harm that came from some of its members. With a cast including Seth Green, Macaulay Culkin, Marilyn Manson, Dylan McDermott, Wilmer Valderrama, Chloë Sevigny and many more, Party Monster is a colourful and enjoyable film with a sad reality and important message behind it.

5. Gods Own Country (2017)

(Director: Francis Lee)

A Yorkshire farmer who spends his days numbing himself with alcohol and sex meets a Romanian migrant worker who leaves him a changed person. There is something so incredibly tender about this film, the longing and understanding expressed between Johnny and Gheorghe feels so immensely profound and genuine.
