One Film From Each Decade That Is Perfect For The Family: 1970’s Onwards

1970s: Bugsy Malone (1976)

This 1970s spoof based of gangsters in 1920s&30s New York and Chicago, Bugsy Malone is a kindhearted film meant to not take itself seriously, which is clearly shown by the all-child cast. Despite this, it’s an enjoyable film and a great one for the family to watch.

1980s: The Goonies (1985)

When Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus and Richard Donner came together to collaborate on a film, we got The Goonies. This film follows a group of friends as they struggle to save their homes from a property developer. Whilst searching in the attic they find a treasure map and thus set out on an adventure to find the treasure. This film is an absolute blast and is still believed to this day.

1990s: The Mighty Ducks (1992)

One of the film treasures from the 90s, The Mighty Ducks is a ‘quacking’ good time. Directed by Stephen Herek, this 1992 classic follows lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) who has been sentenced to community service following a drunk driving charge. His service is to be the new coach of the peewee hockey team called District 5 and to try and lead them to the peewee championship. This film is a barrel of laughs and enjoyable from start to finish.

2000s: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Arguably one of the best films ever made, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a ‘swashbuckling’ great time. The story follows blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) who must team up with eccentric pirate Jack Sparrow, (sorry, I mean) ‘Captain’ Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue his love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the devious Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Adventure, romance, pirates, swordfights, cannons blasting you name it this film has it. A great popcorn flick and a great film for the family to enjoy.

2010s: Despicable Me (2010)

One of the funniest and heartwarming animated films of the last decade, Despicable Me is the perfect family film. The story follows supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) as he attempts to become the greatest villain of all time, but his plans are faltered when someone steals the great pyramid of Giza. He plans to one up that by stealing the moon by shrinking it but again his plans go up in the air when someone steals the shrink ray from him. In order to get it back, he pretends to be a dentist and adopts three girls who he plans to use to help him get the shrink ray back. Throughout this whole ordeal, he slowly starts to wonder and doubt, if his life of villainy is worth it. This is defiantly one of the best animated kid's films to come out in the modern era and is enjoyable for the whole family.
