The Cinemas Comeback

Many filmmakers and filmgoers have been anxious for the future of the cinema experience due to the pandemic. There has been a recent rise in use and different types of streaming services. Many films released are exclusive to particular forums, thus declining the need to leave one's home for viewing a recent film release. This was only furthered during the pandemic and stay at home orders, to a point where the United States theatre chain AMC Entertainment was on the brink of bankruptcy and was only saved by the stock market frenzy which occurred early this past january. Even more recently, a US based movie chain, The Arclight and Pacific Theaters, have closed their doors because, in the words of a statement released, there is no growth or the business and its future has no feasible options.

The UK just reopened outdoor drive-in theaters and will reopen indoor showings shortly on May 17. And the United States has had masks and limited capacity showings slowly starting from the middle of March. Shortly after, on March 31st, Kong vs. Godzilla (2021) was released and has made precedent.

It has currently earned $69.5 million dollars in the United States, and internationally has accumulated approximately $358 million dollars, earning itself the place of the highest earning film of the past year. It has a good rating showing 75% critics score and 92% audience score currently for Rotten Tomatoes. It is commonly considered a good film, helping boost the likelihood of others watching and this, mixed with the reopening of many businesses, has increased success.

This is encouraging, as other films with star studded casts that should entice viewers have tanked, such as Voyagers (2021), while others have done only decently during the current times.

This seems very promising then. Although each country is taking a track back to normalcy in its own unique and variable way, we are all finding our way back. The future of the film industry is changing in response to the consumers drift towards streaming services and with the pandemic sweeping the earth, the silver screen seemed headed to an inevitable death. The certainty of its prevalence still remained questionable at best, but the income from Kong Vs. Godzilla (2021) puts it back as a viable option in the upcoming future.
