The Iconic Career of Cher

Cher, the Goddess of Pop, has had a long and fulfilling career, spanning over 50 years. From singing, to acting and many other ventures, Cher has taken on and dominated every area of entertainment she has been a part of.

This week, on May 20th, sees the legend's 75th birthday. To celebrate such a successful career, below will feature some of the work she has done within the film industry, from starring in features to iconic side characters and even her one and only directing debut.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2008, dir. Ol Parker)

Cher's reveal as the blonde-bombshell grandmother to Mamma Mia's Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) was nothing short of genius for the iconic musical. The long-awaited sequel to the 2008 film, Cher's vocals make this sequel as brilliant as it is.

Moonstruck (1987, dir. Norman Jewison)

Starring alongside a young Nicolas Cage, Cher is the beautiful Loretta Castorini, an Italian-American widow. After accepting a marriage proposal from her boneheaded boyfriend, she finds herself falling in love with his younger brother instead. It was this role as Loretta that Cher in fact won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1988.

Burlesque (2010, dir. Steve Antin)

Cher is Tess, the formidable burlesque performer. Ali (Christina Aguilera), is referred to Tess for an audition to be a performer at the club; initially Tess rejects her, but the two then form a strong bond in an attempt to save the club. Cher is the epitome of glitz and glam in this film and no one else could have been considered for this role.

The Witches of Eastwick (1987, dir. George Miller)

The Witches of Eastwick boasts an impressive cast including Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and of course, the legendary Cher. The three women, completely unaware of their magical abilities, meet a strange and enigmatic man by the name of Daryl Van Horne. His arrival to the small town stirs up trouble and leads to the women becoming aware of their abilities.

If These Walls Could Talk (1996, dir. Cher and Nancy Savoca)

If These Walls Could Talk is Cher's one and only role as director, which is surprising due to how touching and wonderful this film was. She also briefly stars in the film as Dr. Beth Thompson. The story is of three women, spread over three decades (50s, 70s and 90s) who find themselves pregnant and the struggles that they, and many other women, face when contemplating an abortion.
