Unbelievable Movie Plot Twists - Part 1

Have you ever watched a movie and then suddenly something dramatic is revealed or discovered that changes the whole atmosphere of the movie? Then do you find yourself having to rewatch over and over now you know what the plot twist is? Here is part 1, including five movies that have shocking plot twists.

1. Planet of the Apes, 1968, Franklin J. Schaffner

The original Planet of the Apes stars Charlton Heston as Colonel Taylor, leader of a crew of astronauts who travel to a “different planet” far in the future after being in human tanks or something, they then find a civilisation where intelligent apes who act as humans have the humans as slaves. This movie gives us one of the best movie endings ever as well as having an incredible plot twist where (spoiler alert) he was on earth the whole time but far into the future where it’s now run by apes and cut to the scene of the Statue of Liberty where Charlton Heston delivers his classic speech as he can’t believe what eventually happens to mankind.

2. Oldboy, 2003, Park Chan-wook

Oldboy is a classic movie from South Korean cinema and delivers a stomach turning twist at the end that was staring you in the face the whole time. It follows Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a man who is imprisoned for 15 years in a hotel room type prison and has no idea why he is there. He is suddenly released and has to figure out why he was imprisoned in the first place, as we slowly piece together parts of the story, it’s the last 30 minutes that we get the twist revealing the true extent Lee Woo-jin has done to enact his revenge on Dae-su.

3. The Prestige, 2006, Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige is definitely an underrated gem starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as two rival magicians beginning as friends, but after a trick turns deadly they then try to compete to become the best magician with more elaborate stunts. It’s really the ending twist that shocks you as the twist is obvious from the beginning and requires a second viewing as so many hints and clues are spread throughout.

4. Gone Girl, 2014, David Fincher

Ben Affleck portrays Nick Dunne, a man whose wife mysteriously disappears and suddenly Nick finds himself as the main suspect. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, half way through we find out what really happened to Nick’s wife Amy, from her perspective and what follows is a gripping dark mystery.

5. Primal Fear, 1996, Gregory Hoblit

Primal Fear is a murder mystery thriller where Richard Gere plays lawyer Martin Vail, who is desperately trying to prove the innocence of Edward Norton’s character Aaron Stampler after he’s accused of murdering an archbishop. With a brilliant and shocking twist ending, which highlights Edward Norton’s acting ability, just after you think the film is over it hits you with a plot twist that is arguably the best part of the film.
