Upcoming Student Film: When I Close My Eyes

In support of fellow young and upcoming student filmmakers, there is a new short film being released today 14 May 2021 called When I Close My Eyes. This moving short film is about the loss of a young Black girl named Imani’s loved one from having been murdered during a violent police encounter. She grieves the death of Amara and seeks help with therapy, where she is prescribed sleeping medication. Her medicine causes vivid dreams of reconnecting with her lover and holding onto her while she still can. In doing this, she uses more pills than have been prescribed to her and her therapist stops her intake. Imani has one last dream of Amara reassuring her love and encouraging her to let go and navigate through her life without her.

It's a hot topic story about dealing with sudden loss and love and learning to pick up the pieces of a broken heart. This film was made by two student filmmakers Sade Borishade and Naomi Tiggs. This project has a passionate creative outlook and, in the words of writer and director Naomi Tiggs, ”this piece was for people to see how murders by the police affect the loved ones of those murdered. I also wanted to show that Black love is a powerful and mystical force that can overpower the oppressors. I wanted to create a film that Black queer women could see themselves in, along with dark skinned Black women. I wrote this piece during the protests last summer and it was therapeutic for me to express through Imani the anger I was feeling.” Overall, it is a story that needs to be heard from the voices of young Black female filmmakers to intimately describe their outlook on these topical issues.

This is a must-see short film that is being premiered today at the East London Film Festival, which is being organised by second year Film students at the University of East London. It can also be found on the 7thVision Production channel on Youtube.
